Kate Dang
Vedant Das Swain
In the midst of the pandemic, we opted to meet at my apartment. We made tortillas from scratch and despite his inexperience, Vedant's tortillas were much rounder than mine. We have not attempted to make tortillas since, but we have cooked many other delicious dishes at home.
Our first hike together ended with Kate's ankle hurt and swollen on the way downhill. We got her home safe but despite my advice Kate refused to stay put and rest. Bouncing around as always. Eventually, she realized that icing was needed. No more running downhill for Kate. But for us, it was only uphill from there.
Visiting Callaway Garden was our first road trip together. I taught Vedant how to paddle board. Little did I know that Vedant would not know how to turn and leave me drowning. Then again I did not have a life jacket. Fortunately, we had enough paddle boarders flopping left-right-and-center so I just hung on to one of those boards. Not exactly Titanic but Vedant eventually reached me after two huge circles of the lake. I've not paddle boarded much since, but I taught Vedant how to kayak too. He prefers that over drowning. At Callaway Gardens we saw massive hot air balloons and fireworks. In that moment we confessed our feelings to each other the first time. A short time later, I received an email from him with the subject, "Exclusive Offer for an Unlimited Time".
Back when it was time for mid-autumn festival, I had pulled a few strings to get moon cakes for Kate. Along comes Diwali and Kate did me one better. Kate hosted a wonderful warm celebration at home with plenty of love, friendship, sparklers, and as always, food. It was our first Indian festival together. In fact, it was the first time I truly celebrated since I came to America. Now we try to cherish every holiday and festival, especially the weekends.
Within a year we had walked at least a 1000 miles just between our 2 apartments. We decided to move in together. Learn to live around each other and share responsibilities. Before we knew it we weren't just sharing a space, we had created a home. Our first home together. Now we don't need to walk thousand miles to meet each other, but we can walk thousands of miles together.
It was a Saturday afternoon in the Fall of 2021. The plan was to go on a surprise date to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. My only request was that we followed the route I decided, because that way we could see the prettiest tree in Piedmont Park. If the colors weren't enough, that tree had balloons and lanterns. Right below it was my iPad with a video I had made to remind her why I want to be with her forever. By the time that video ended, I was on my knee and asked Kate the question that has brought us here today. We didn't think we could be any happier before that November evening. We surprised ourselves. And we've got a feeling we'll surprise ourselves again this December.
